I notice something is wrong. So I recheck the usual. 4 tailpipes, check. M badge on the side trim piece, check. Bumper, check. Wheels, check. Wide tires, check.

So I kept looking at it because traffic was awful this morning (and it's an e39) and I figured it out. Here is the photo I took of it (excuse my SatNav):

The goddamn 5 is upside down. Now I don't know what to believe. Been bothering me all day.

Wow I need glasses or drink less...I thought you were driving the M5 and felt something wrong then found this. Driving behind it makes a lot more sense.

I had an insurance customer that thought an M5 bumper and wheels made his car an M5. It was missing two cylinders and about 150 HP but goddamnit it was and M5 and don't tell me differently!

Probably debadged by a previous owner and then rebadged, or replaced stolen emblems, but wasn't looking closely at that "5"...good spot!

I see ads on CL all the time of some idiot trying to sell of a 528i as an M5 saying shit like "SAME as M5! Bumper upgrades!" - and of course even then its on horrible RIMZ!, bumpers are misaligned and has a shitty paint job on the pictures...these drug dealers are on some really good shit. But failing at rule 1 of drug dealing - don't consume your product!

Did you check out the mirrors? Most "converters" always forget M's use different mirrors.

Ugh I hate the 'M5 "clone" it's totally the same thing.' Just a mess of a car usually. Luckily this one had the proper M5 wheels.

Here are M5 mirrors vs "regular" 5 series mirrors. M5 on top and M Package on the bottom.

Really? I think they're awesome. All Ms starting with.....I wanna say the E36 have different mirrors.

I think E46's use the old M5 mirrors.

(M6's have the same mirrors as E90 M5s)

1M's use the "old" M3 mirrors.

I think the only exceptions are the X5M and X6M, but come on.....those are ugly to begin with.

Yeah, I like the dual post mirrors like on the 1M and e90's. I dunno, I think the mirrors look sweet on pretty much everything but the e39.
